Diabetic Eye Exam

Diagnostic Testing Tailored to Diabetics

If you are diabetic, it is critical that you take active control over your eye care – diabetes can cause a vision-threatening illness called diabetic retinopathy (which only affects those living with diabetes).

We offer an eye exam which is designed to:

Been more than 1 year since your last screening? Arrange an eye health exam with our practice asap – you may not notice any symptoms of diabetic eye disease before your vision is quite compromised.

What to Expect

There are certain areas to which we pay particular attention during a diabetic eye exam, and these require specific tests.

  • Ocular coherence tomography – Surface damage to the retina or optic nerve is often associated with diabetic retinopathy, so we use cutting-edge imaging to take high-resolution pictures of the inside of the eye. If there is swelling or bleeding, this will pick it up.
  • Fundus autofluorescence – Using Optomap imaging, as well as the natural fluorescence of your retina, we test the overall health of your retina and look for signs of early Diabetic Retinopathy.
  • Visual acuity test – Diabetic retinopathy is a leading cause of blindness among adults in the western world. We test your eyesight thoroughly to identify any gaps, blurriness or dark spots which you may not notice yourself.

A Positive Diagnosis

If you are diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy, then we will help you take your next steps. If it is early, then lifestyle adjustments like dietary changes may help slow its progression. If the condition is already quite advanced, we may have to refer you for more invasive treatments like laser surgery.

Whatever the outcome, your doctor at Nicola Eye Care will be there to help and guide you, whether it’s disease management or learning to live with impaired vision.

Why it’s Important to Undergo Diabetic-Specific Screening

Diabetic retinopathy can virtually destroy your vision if left untreated. Screening allows us to diagnose early, which means we can initiate effective treatment and management plans before your vision becomes irrevocably hampered.

Where conditions like dry eye or cataracts have direct, noticeable symptoms, diabetic retinopathy can reach quite an advanced stage before most patients will recognise the problem themselves. We can detect it much earlier.

Since around 40% of people with diabetes are likely to experience a degree of retinopathy, an eye health exam which reveals no ocular health issues can take a load off your mind, helping you manage the disease with one less thing to worry about.
